Vízibility for Everyone – The Relationship of Africa and Hungary in Terms of Water

befejezett project

NEFE, Millenium Development Goals, EYD. Expressions which are unknown to most Hungarian citizens. Year 2015 is when these expressions get linked, and thus we feel obliged to provide information about them.

On the first of May 2004 when Hungary officially became a member of the European Union, beside the positivity obvious for everyone, the country took on duties as well that were – and perhaps still are – unknown to the citizens. The EU and every European citizen must hold a coherent view on certain concepts such as the International Development or otherwise called NEFE. Newly emerging problems of the global world are to be solved and need to be responded to also by the European Union. For this reason, within the European Union, Hungary needs a NEFE policy strategy as well. Several studies prove that expressions like the above have so far been unknown to Hungarians and as a result, the commitment to them has also been weak. If ever, in 2015 it can change because 2015 is the European Year of Development, EYD. The deadline which the 189 member states of the UN undertook in 2000 to achieve the Millenium Development Goals expires this year. One of the goals has been to solve global problems namely to eradicate poverty and famine, to achieve gender equality and to halt the spreading of the most devastating diseases. This is why 2015 has become the European Year of Development.

One of the main functions of our Foundation is national awareness-raising. We would like every Hungarian citizen to agree that international development and relief are vital and to contribute to them according to their own opportunities. Therefore, this year we consider it an especially important mission of ours to provide information on the concepts mentioned above. This is one of the reasons why we have launched our Vízibility for Everyone – The Relationship of Africa and Hungary in Terms of Water project. Our aim is to inform Hungarian citizens about the development cooperation in Africa by the European Union and Hungary focussing mainly on the global issues of healthcare and water, highlighting the accomplishments in the fields so far. Why the issue of water? In recent years numerous NEFE projects have been carried out in Africa in the fields of water and healthcare which are among the priorities of the Hungarian NEFE. Water is a concrete and well communicable global issue. In addition, our country is closely linked to water, we have considerable experience regarding the issue. Thus, we believe that Hungary can have a leading role in the water-related developments by the EU in Africa.

What is the direct goal of our project? We would like to inform and at the same time encourage Hungarian citizens (primarily the youth), small and medium-sized enterprises and non-governmental organizations to join the NEFE projects of the EU and thereby that of Hungary in Africa focussing on the global issues of healthcare and water. We would herewith want to create a virtual-real "VÍZIBILITY" community and campaign mainly through social media sites as well as through organizing events.

What exactly does that mean? In 2015 we will be continuously providing information on the EYD, on the global issue of water, on possible responses to it, and on the role of Hungary and its citizens in its solution. The extent to which these goals have central roles in the NEFE strategy of Hungary becomes clear from the fact that ours has been chosen to be the winner following tender invitations for the EYD by the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Thus, the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade will be the main sponsor of our project.
